McCall: I don’t care if we’re boring

On Wednesday evening, Saracens’ Director of Rugby, Mark McCall issued a message to the critics of the way in which his side plays. That message was loud and clear- “We don’t care.”

After Wasps became the latest side to lose against the current league champions, Dai Young said that Saracens’ style of play was “boring”. This is however not backed up by any real evidence as Saracens have scored 41 tries in 11 games which has given them three try bonus points and means that only Exeter Chiefs have scored more.

It is true that Saracens used to be a side who scored very little and relied on their kicker for all of their points, but that has changed over the course of recent seasons, and this season, their attack has seen teams bear witness to some amazing scores. Saracens may look to kick the ball more often than others, but when they see that it is on to attack, they go for it and are one of the most accurate teams in the northern hemisphere.

McCall says that he finds a beauty in defense and putting teams under pressure so that they make mistakes, and so he says that Saracens will not change the way in which they play just because others don’t like it and cannot deal with it.
