Rugby Union News Today: Magpies move clear, Jones joins the Ospreys board and more

Jones joins Ospreys board

Legendary Lions, Wales and Ospreys second-row Alun-Wyn Jones has come as a director on the Ospreys board.

The legendary figure who made his Ospreys debut in 2005 comes onto the board at a crucial time as the WRU will revoke the license for either the Ospreys or the Scarlets by 2028.

Magpies continue NPC dominance

Hawkes Bay have maintained their 100% record in the NPC and are the only team to have won all their games. The Magpies beat Manawatu 59-17. The game was relatively close at halftime as a try with the clock in the red, the home side scored to go 17-12 ahead.

They would score six second-half tries, conceding only one to win the game convincingly.

Griquas try to build Currie Cup gap

Griquas have picked up a strong win away to the Pumas to bring them to 26 points for the season. They have won five of their six games and have created a gap of five points at the top of the table. This gap is above the Cheetahs, who will play on Sunday and hope to close this gap, if not join Griquas on 26 points, if they can get a bonus point against Boland.

Griquas have won five games in a row, having had their only loss in their opener to the Stormers.

Zambonin to miss the start of the Chiefs season

Exeter have released an update ahead of the new season taht will see their key second row Andrea Zambonin miss the start of the season. In an update on the club’s website Rob Baxter said, “Unfortunately, Andrea returned from Italy’s summer games with a niggling shoulder issue that, upon further inspection, was deemed serious enough to require an operation.

“His recovery timescale looks like he won’t be available until after the autumn international block.”
