Australia U20 have made their clearest selection statement of the Junior World Championship, turning to overseas-based front-row power for the decisive Pool D meeting with France in Kutaisi.
Chris Whitaker’s side face the U20 Six Nations champions on Tuesday, with World Rugby listing the fixture at AIA Arena as Australia’s final pool match after wins over Spain and Fiji. France entered the tournament as one of the heavyweights, having won the 2026 U20 Six Nations and chased a fourth Junior World Championship title.
The key shift is up front. Kingbenjamin Swerling-Finaipepe and Lehopoame Leota, both selected from French club pathways, are set to start either side of hooker Ewald Kruger. World Rugby’s tournament preview had already flagged their inclusion as a landmark, noting it was the first time Australian players had been picked for the Junior World Championship while contracted outside the country’s Super Rugby system.
Why The Front Row Call Matters
Australia have carried serious strike threat through Treyvon Pritchard, Zach Fittler, Tom Farr-Jones and Wallace Charlie, but France ask a different question. Their age-grade sides usually squeeze matches through set-piece pressure, kicking territory and collisions around the ruck.
That makes Whitaker’s front-row call more than rotation. It is an attempt to meet France at the source of their control before Australia’s backs get room to work.
