Treyvon Pritchard will start at inside centre for Australia U20s after being thrust straight into the Junior Wallabies’ side for their Junior World Championship opener against Spain in Kutaisi.
The Queensland Reds back is one of the headline selections in Chris Whitaker’s matchday squad, with Australia beginning Pool D against a Spain side still chasing a first pool-stage victory at this level.
Pritchard selection changes Australia’s midfield picture
Pritchard’s rise has accelerated through a strong Super Rugby Pacific campaign with the Reds, and his selection gives Australia a direct, athletic carrier at 12 alongside Taione Taka.
Whitaker has also named Tom Robinson as captain, while Tom Farr-Jones starts on the wing and Cooper Watters adds sevens speed on the opposite edge. Angus Grover and Finn Mackay control the halves, with Chayse Geros selected at full-back.
Australia’s bench carries further intrigue. French-based props Lehopoame Leota and Kingbenjamin Swerling-Finaipepe are listed among the replacements after joining the squad in Georgia from Racing 92 and Castres academy environments.
Spain test is a dangerous opening marker
World Rugby’s tournament preview underlined Spain’s improvement after narrow defeats to Argentina, Wales and Ireland last year. That makes this a cleaner test than reputation alone suggests.
Australia also have Fiji and France to come in Pool D, so the Spain match is not just an opener. It is the platform game, and it follows the broader Australia U20 pathway test already facing Whitaker’s squad in Georgia. A sharp Pritchard debut would immediately reset the Junior Wallabies’ backline ceiling before the pool tightens.
