Ireland have begun their Sydney build-up with the shape of Andy Farrell’s Australia test week now coming into sharper focus.
The IRFU confirmed the squad had arrived in two blocks earlier this week before settling into their base ahead of the Nations Championship opener against Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies on 4 July at Allianz Stadium.
The timing matters. Ireland’s first full training session was scheduled for Thursday, giving Farrell a short runway before the group moves into a normal match-week rhythm from Monday.
Sheehan’s leadership window grows
The Sydney leg has added weight after Caelan Doris was ruled out of Ireland’s summer tests, leaving Dan Sheehan’s captaincy role under an even brighter light.
Ireland’s schedule is severe: Australia in Sydney, Japan in Newcastle on 11 July, then New Zealand at Eden Park on 18 July. That is not a development tour disguised as a summer trip; it is an early stress test for Farrell’s next cycle.
The IRFU also noted the Australia fixture is sold out, with Irish supporters expected in significant numbers. That turns the opener into more than a tour launch. It is Ireland’s first match in Australia since the 2018 Lansdowne Cup series win, and Schmidt’s presence across the divide gives the week a sharper tactical edge.
For Farrell, the question is how quickly Ireland can move from recovery mode to test-match authority. Sydney will offer the first proper answer.
