Caelan Doris Ruled Out Of Ireland Summer Tests As Dan Sheehan Takes Captaincy

Ireland captain Caelan Doris has been ruled out of the Nations Championship Southern Series, with Dan Sheehan now set to lead Andy Farrell’s side on the three-Test July tour.

The IRFU confirmed Doris suffered a foot injury during Leinster’s URC final win, while Tommy O’Brien has also withdrawn with a groin issue. Ireland travel to face Australia on 4 July, Japan on 11 July and New Zealand on 18 July, leaving Farrell without his regular captain before a demanding southern-hemisphere block.

Ulster brothers Bryn Ward and Zac Ward have been called into the squad as replacements, adding two uncapped players to a group that already had Connacht trio Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Sean Jansen waiting for possible senior debuts.

Sheehan captaincy changes Ireland’s tour picture

The key shift is not only Doris’ absence, but the leadership reshuffle it forces. Sheehan, another Leinster forward, now becomes the central figure for a tour that will test Ireland’s depth across three very different fixtures.

The official update from Irish Rugby said Doris and O’Brien will miss all three matches, with the squad departing for Sydney before the opening Test against Australia. For Farrell, the immediate task is balancing development with credibility, especially as New Zealand in Auckland closes the schedule.

Doris remains a major loss because of his breakdown influence, carrying and authority as captain. Sheehan’s promotion gives Ireland continuity in the pack, but the Ward brothers’ call-ups make this a more experimental tour than first planned.

Irish Rugby confirmed the squad changes in its official update.
