Christopher Hilsenbeck’s late penalty gave the USA a 30-29 escape against Portugal in Denver, turning a chaotic World Rugby Nations Cup opener into a major result for Scott Lawrence’s side.
The World Rugby review framed it as one of the opening weekend’s sharpest finishes, with Portugal wing Manuel Cardoso Pinto scoring four tries and still ending on the wrong side of the result.
Portugal led through early pressure and a cleaner kicking game, but the Eagles stayed close through Cory Daniel, Paddy Ryan and Dominic Besag tries. Hilsenbeck then turned the match into a scoreboard grind, landing all three conversions and all three penalties, including the decisive strike from beyond 30 metres.
Why USA escaped
The official USA Rugby match centre shows how fine the margin was. Portugal scored four tries to three and made more clean breaks, but two red cards, 12 penalties conceded and sustained American possession in the final 10 minutes changed the shape of the contest.
For Lawrence, this was more than an Independence Day win. The USA’s next Nations Cup fixtures against Zimbabwe and Spain now carry a different edge, with a side building toward Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 already banking a pressure result at home.
