Ulster Draw Gives Challenge Cup Finalists Clear Pool 1 Route

Ulster have been given a clear European reset point after landing in Pool 1 of the 2026/27 EPCR Challenge Cup.

The province, beaten finalists in Bilbao last season, will face Toyota Cheetahs, USAP, Dragons RFC, Aviron Bayonnais and Zebre Parma after the pool draw was staged in Dublin. Irish Rugby confirmed the full pool and match-window structure, while Ulster Rugby framed the draw as the starting point for another serious Challenge Cup push.

Why Pool 1 Gives Ulster A Manageable European Target

This is not a soft group, but it is one Ulster should view with ambition. The South African travel demand attached to the Cheetahs is the obvious logistical complication, while Bayonne and USAP bring Top 14 physicality. Dragons and Zebre Parma, though, give Richie Murphy’s side fixtures where control, set-piece pressure and squad depth should translate into table points.

  • Pool: Toyota Cheetahs, Ulster Rugby, USAP, Dragons RFC, Aviron Bayonnais, Zebre Parma.
  • Opening round: October 16/17/18.
  • Final: OL Stadium, Lyon, Friday, May 21.

The draw also lands with Ulster still carrying the credibility of last season’s run. Captain Iain Henderson and the province’s senior core now have a cleaner target: make home advantage count early, avoid a damaging travel stumble, and turn last year’s final appearance into a platform rather than a one-off surge.
