EPCR’s 2026/27 rule changes have given Wednesday’s pool draw a sharper competitive edge, with Champions Cup qualification tightened before clubs discover their routes through Europe.
The organiser has confirmed that only the top three clubs in each Investec Champions Cup pool will now qualify automatically for the round of 16. The remaining four places will go to the highest-scoring wildcard teams across all pools, while match wins will sit above points difference as a tie-breaker.
That matters for Leinster, Northampton Saints, Stade Toulousain and defending champions Union Bordeaux-Begles, the confirmed Tier 1 clubs for the draw. For Leinster figures such as James Lowe, it also changes the calculation for sides who previously knew fourth place in a pool was enough to stay alive.
Why the new bonus-point rule matters
The second major change is the try bonus. Instead of the familiar four-try reward, clubs must now score at least three tries more than their opponents to bank the extra point. EPCR says the shift follows consultation with the Gallagher PREM, URC and TOP 14, and is designed to keep pool-stage games competitive for longer.
The Challenge Cup will follow the same direction, with top-three pool qualification and wildcard places adapted to its 18-club structure.
ReadRugbyUnion has already covered why the EPCR pool draw carries extra weight this year. These rules now make the margins harsher: one loose away defeat, or one missed bonus-point chase, could reshape April before winter is even finished.
