The DHL Stormers XXIII will enter the Carling Currie Cup for the first time this season, turning a brand alignment exercise into a genuine selection tool for John Dobson.
Stormers Rugby confirmed that the side will compete under the DHL Stormers XXIII banner after consolidating its professional teams beneath one identity. The opening-round fixture is set for Cape Town against Suzuki Griquas on 17 July, giving the franchise a public bridge between its development group and the senior URC squad.
Stormers make depth visible
The decision matters because the Stormers are trying to turn squad depth into something measurable before the 2026/27 campaign. Dobson said the competition gives younger players a platform to compete for places in the Vodacom URC and Investec Champions Cup squad.
That is the sharp edge of the announcement. The Stormers have just come through another demanding URC season, and their domestic layer now has a clearer route into the senior conversation. It should also help the club sell its pathway more aggressively after recent attention around South African squad depth and returning senior figures.
Chief commercial officer Leontine De Sutter framed the move as a brand and audience play, arguing that one Stormers identity gives the XXIII side stronger backing and better profile-building power. For Dobson, the value is more direct: a weekly pressure test for players chasing the next step.
Read Rugby Union has recently tracked the wider South African selection squeeze, and this development fits the same picture. The pathway beneath the Springboks and URC sides is becoming more visible, more competitive, and harder to ignore.
