Glasgow currently sit just on point behind league leaders, the Stormers. Glasgow sit on 55 points, and Cardiff, in sixth, currently sit five points behind the home team and therefore could catch the team in second. 

Cardiff sit three points ahead of Ulster in eighth and one point ahead of Ulster. They will remain inside the top eight as they enter the final game, but a defeat could leave them vulnerable in the final game.

Glasgow have had a poor series of games, getting knocked out of the Champions Cup in a narrow defeat to Toulon and then losing both matches of their South African tour heavily. In the last round, they were defeated 48-12. At halftime, the game still looked in the balance as Glasgow scored just before the break to bring them back to 24-12 behind. The Stormers scored three second-half tries without conceding to win by 36 points.

Cardiff have won their two games since returning to action from the European break and have set themselves up in a strong position for playoff qualification. These two Welsh derby wins came by margins of four points or less. They beat the Ospreys at home in their last game, 24-21. They took a commanding 24-7 lead with just over 20 minutes to go, and despite conceding twice, they were able to hold on to control of the scoreboard.
