Callum Sheedy has committed his future to Cardiff Rugby, describing his decision to remain at his hometown club as a “no-brainer” following an influential spell back at the Arms Park.

The 30-year-old fly-half has been central to Cardiff’s resurgence over the past two seasons, racking up 168 points in 38 appearances since returning from Bristol Bears, where he spent a decade developing into an international-calibre playmaker.

Sheedy has said that the decision to extend his stay was rooted in both emotion and ambition.

“Staying at Cardiff was an absolute no brainer for me,” he said.

“When I signed for the club two years ago it was all about coming back to my home club and where it all started. It has been everything I dreamed of and more.”

A Homecoming That Delivered

Sheedy’s return to Cardiff has brought more than just points.

It has added control, experience and a clear attacking direction to a side that has grown into genuine play-off contenders in the United Rugby Championship.

“The players and staff here are amazing and the culture we have built together makes every day so enjoyable,” he added.

“Playing at the Arms Park is the most special feeling. We have incredible supporters, they are close to the pitch and the atmosphere is electric.”

That connection between team and supporters has become a defining feature of Cardiff’s season, with Sheedy at the heart of it.

His ability to manage games and dictate tempo has provided a platform for a younger, developing squad to express themselves.

Leadership and Rugby IQ Key to Cardiff’s Progress

Head coach Corniel van Zyl was quick to underline the importance of securing Sheedy’s future, pointing to the fly-half’s influence both on and off the field.

“We are really happy that Sheeds has decided to stay at the club,” he said. “He has become a really important player here and is enjoying a rich vein of form.

“His rugby IQ is next level, and he manages matches and the training week very well. His communication and leadership is first class and he continually works hard to improve his all-round game.”

Van Zyl also highlighted Sheedy’s personality within the group, noting his ability to balance intensity with composure.

“He is quite a character and brings good energy to the group, while also managing the collective emotional levels,” he added.

Cardiff Focused on URC Play-Off Ambition

The timing of Sheedy’s contract extension comes at a crucial point in the season. Cardiff remain firmly in the hunt for a first-ever United Rugby Championship play-off berth, with two decisive fixtures remaining.

Trips to Glasgow Warriors and a home clash against the Stormers will determine whether their campaign extends into the knockout stages.

“I’m really excited by what the future holds. It is a young and hungry group and I am desperate to do everything possible to make sure it is a successful period for the club.”

Stability and Ambition Moving Forward

In securing Sheedy, Cardiff have retained not just a key player, but a leader who embodies the club’s identity.

His journey from academy product to international and back again has come full circle, and his presence offers continuity at a time when the region is building momentum.

With a play-off place within reach and a core group developing around him, Sheedy’s commitment signals belief in the direction Cardiff are heading.
