Last week, it appeared the Sharks of South Africa were favourites to sign legendary Australian player James O’Connor.

However, two sides from his native Australia have entered the race for his signature when his contract with the Leicester Tigers ends at the end of the season.

A move to South Africa would see the Australian play in the URC for the first time, having also played in Super Rugby, the Prem and Top 14.

The Sharks had been in discussions with Tomasso Allan, but the Italian international is moving to Zebre once his time at Perpignan comes to an end.

Who is interested in James O’Connor?

Neil Fissler of RugbyPass reports that O’Connor has been contacted by both the Queensland Reds and NSW Waratahs. Fissler reports that there have been no contract offers yet, but discussions have taken place.

The Queensland Reds have been a familiar destination for O’Connor, having returned from Europe to sign for the Reds on two occasions. He’s played a total of 70 Super Rugby games for the Reds over the two spells.

The Waratahs would offer a new challenge for the 68-time capped Wallaby.

O’Connor has been a great squad member for the Leicester Tigers this year, having helped them to a Prem Cup win and a push for the top four in the league. He has worked particularly well under Billy Searle, who, with O’Connor alongside, has come on leaps and bounds throughout the year.

The Aussie has been notorious for his transfer moves since he made his international debut at 18.

Leicester have been the third English club in O’Connor’s portfolio, having played for London Irish and the Sale Sharks. His current spell in England has been hampered by some injuries, but his experience still makes him a fascinating support player, particularly when looking to develop a variety of young players.
