The Sharks have emerged as shock frontrunners to sign veteran fly-half James O’Connor, as they look to bolster their squad ahead of next season.
O’Connor, currently with Leicester Tigers, is approaching the end of his short-term deal in the Gallagher Premiership.
While his time in England has been disrupted by injury and limited opportunities, his experience and versatility continue to attract interest across the global game.
Sharks Shift Focus After Missing Allan
Head coach JP Pietersen has turned to O’Connor after missing out on Tommaso Allan, who recently agreed a move to Zebre Parma.
The Sharks had identified Allan as a key target, particularly given his recent involvement with Italy national rugby union team during the Six Nations Championship.
However, with that deal no longer an option, attention has quickly shifted toward securing a proven playmaker.
Experience and Depth Key to O’Connor Interest
Despite being 35, O’Connor remains a valuable asset.
His career has spanned multiple top-tier competitions, including stints in Australia, England, France and New Zealand, making him one of the most experienced backs potentially available on the market.
His current spell at Leicester has seen him play a supporting role behind Billy Searle, with injuries — including a hamstring issue, that has limited his opportunities.
Even so, he contributed to the Tigers’ recent success in the Premiership Cup, coming off the bench to score in the final against Exeter Chiefs.
Squad Changes Drive Recruitment Strategy
The Sharks’ interest in O’Connor reflects a growing need for depth in key positions.
Departures have created gaps within the squad, with Jean Smith set to join Benetton Rugby and Luan Giliomee moving to the Bulls.
While Jordan Hendrikse remains part of the long-term picture — and has recently featured in alignment camps under Rassie Erasmus — the Sharks are keen to add experienced cover to guide and support their younger options.
Talks Expected as Decision Nears
Reports suggest further discussions between O’Connor and the Sharks are expected in the coming weeks. With the player’s contract expiring and interest from multiple clubs, the situation remains fluid.
However, the Sharks’ intent is clear. They want experience, composure and leadership at fly-half, and O’Connor could provide all three, considering they will be targeting a better conclusion to their campaign in the 26/27 season.
If completed, the move would mark another chapter in the well-travelled career of one of rugby’s most recognisable playmakers, while offering the Sharks a steady hand as they look to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.
