The fallout from the United Rugby Championship clash between the Ospreys and the Sharks continues to build after winger Luke Morgan hit back at criticism over an incident that left Ethan Hooker injured.
The moment came just before half-time in the Ospreys’ 21–17 win. Hooker broke clear and finished under the posts, but Morgan followed through and landed on his back as the try was grounded.
The Sharks back later left the field with a dislocated shoulder, an injury expected to end his season.
The incident drew strong reactions online and from Sharks head coach JP Pietersen, who questioned why no action was taken.
“After scoring a try, the rules say you are not supposed to dive on a player,” Pietersen said. “He dislocated his shoulder… to lose him like that was very disappointing.”
Morgan defended himself publicly, arguing the ball was still live at the point of contact.
He insisted the tackle fell within the laws, responding directly to criticism on social media.
Sharks question officiating and player welfare
Hooker’s injury has reignited debate around player protection and consistency in officiating. Pietersen expressed frustration that the on-field officials did not review or sanction the challenge, especially given the outcome.
From the Sharks’ perspective, the loss of a key backline player at a crucial stage of the match shifted momentum.
Hooker had already made a major impact with his score and posed a constant threat in open play.
The incident has since circulated widely online, with pundits and supporters split on whether Morgan’s actions were legal but reckless, or simply part of a competitive game played at full speed.
Scrums controversy adds to tension
Tensions did not end there. Pietersen also raised concerns over a separate moment in the second half involving uncontested scrums.
After replacement props Ox Nche and Vincent Koch began to dominate at the set-piece, the Sharks looked set to press home their advantage near the Ospreys’ line.
However, an injury to Ospreys prop Garyn Phillips forced uncontested scrums, removing that attacking platform.
Pietersen questioned whether the situation genuinely warranted the change.
“We don’t know… did he get injured or were they taking the contest away from us?” he said. “We were confident of getting a scrum penalty, which probably would have changed the game.”
Ospreys hold on amid controversy
Despite the controversy, the Ospreys closed out a narrow win, holding off late pressure to secure the result.
The victory keeps them competitive in the URC standings, but the post-match narrative has focused less on performance and more on flashpoints.
For the Sharks, frustration lingers. They not only lost the match but may also be without Hooker for an extended period, a blow to their campaign.
A result overshadowed
Matches between URC sides often bring intensity, but this contest crossed into something more heated.
Between the injury, the officiating debate and questions around the scrum situation, both teams left with strong opinions.
The result stands, but scrutiny will follow.
And with both sides still fighting for position this season, this fixture may carry consequences that stretch well beyond the final whistle.
