Tommy Freeman Signs New Northampton Saints Contract Extension

Tommy Freeman Agrees Northampton Saints Extension

Tommy Freeman has signed a new contract extension with Northampton Saints, agreeing to stay at the Premiership club “for the foreseeable future” despite having a full season remaining on his previous deal. The announcement was confirmed in the BBC Sport report on Tommy Freeman’s extension.

The wing made his Saints debut in 2019 and has since made 118 appearances for the club, scoring 79 tries across all competitions. He scored the opening try in Northampton’s 2024 Premiership final win over Bath, and did so again in their 2026 victory over Exeter Chiefs.

Freeman’s decision lands early in Saints’ retention cycle this year. Fin Smith, Fraser Dingwall and Alex Mitchell have all agreed new deals of their own, keeping several of England’s leading internationals together at the club.

Phil Dowson and Tommy Freeman React to New Deal

Director of rugby Phil Dowson praised the early timing of Freeman’s commitment. “To have Tommy commit his future to the club so early in this season’s recruitment and retention cycle is a huge boost for us,” Dowson said. “We’re delighted that he’s chosen to continue his journey with Northampton Saints.”

Freeman explained his own reasoning to BBC Radio Northampton. “Its a no-brainer in terms of the coaching staff we’ve got,” he said. “I think I’m going to grow as a player here. I don’t think anywhere else at the moment is going to help me do that.”

He also credited the club for his rise with England. “I’m performing with England as well and involved in that, and that’s a big credit to Saints – giving me the opportunity and putting me on the stage to do my skills and go and impress,” Freeman said.

The dressing room culture at Saints played a part too. “You can’t really beat the players in and around us, the group of friends we’ve got, and the coaching staff to help me grow as a player,” he added. “You want to be happy where you’re playing. Being a special group, you go on to achieve something special as a group.”

Sam Vesty Highlights Tactical Versatility and Squad Impact

Attack coach Sam Vesty pointed to Freeman’s versatility as a major asset for Saints’ squad planning. “I think he’ll cover more of the backline,” Vesty said, outlining how the club sees his role developing.

Vesty explained why that flexibility matters as squads shrink under tighter salary rules. “With squads getting that little bit smaller, being able to have a couple of positions to play is a fantastic attribute, and that’s one of his big strengths,” he said.

Freeman’s value extends well beyond club level. He has won 30 England caps and scored 11 tries since his international debut during the 2021 autumn internationals. He also toured Australia with the British and Irish Lions in 2025, making six appearances including three Test matches.

Northampton Retention Priorities and Upcoming Timeline

Freeman’s extension forms part of a wider retention push at Saints this season, following the new deals already agreed by Smith, Dingwall and Mitchell. Northampton have not disclosed the length of Freeman’s contract, but Dowson’s comments suggest the club acted quickly to secure his future before interest from elsewhere could build.

One significant piece of business remains unresolved. Back-rower Henry Pollock’s future at the club has not yet been settled, with reports covering the ongoing contract negotiations with Henry Pollock continuing to circulate, alongside earlier reported interest in Henry Pollock from rival clubs.

For now, Saints supporters can point to Freeman’s extension as clear evidence of the club’s intent to build around its established core. With Smith, Dingwall, Mitchell and Freeman all committed, attention at Franklin’s Gardens will turn to whether Pollock follows suit before the retention window narrows further.
