Significant moments

  • Pieter-Steph Du Toit became the 11th Springbok to reach 100 caps in this game.
  • Ox Nche came from the bench to gain his 50th cap.
  • Dean Fourie became the oldest Springbok.

Tale of the game

The Springboks picked up a huge win in Cape Town to bring the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series back to 1-1.

Rassie Erasmus caused controversy with a late switch to his lineup swapping the entire front row with the bench shortly before kick-off.

The Springboks took advantage of the chaotic start and within the first two minutes had their first try on the board. A powerful Siya Kolisi carry inside the 22 allowed the space for Jesse Kriel to get over between the All Blacks line. The All Blacks didn’t wait long to fight back and on 15 minutes, Will Jordan made an exceptional break on the outside beating two men and was able to get the ball away to Cam Roigard on the inside.

Damian De Allende joined his centre partner on the scoresheet on 21 minutes, breaking through the All Blacks line from five-metres out. The play got checked for a knock-on in the build up, was cleared, but missed some possible obstruction from Dean Fourie in the defensive line.

After a Cheslin Kolbe penalty extended the lead for the Springboks, Ardie Savea made a massive break off the back of a lineout and the All Blacks were able to spread the ball wide and create space for Damian McKenzie to go over in the corner.

Returning from injury the captain, Siya Kolisi led by example to score the third Springboks try before halftime to give the Springboks a 24-14 lead at the break.

Second half

Kolbe kicked two penalties in the first 10 minutes of the second period. The game became a lot tighter and more tactical with its kicking. Leroy Carter showed unbelievable pace and speed to take advantage of a fantastic Quinn Tupaea wide pass to go over in the corner and make the scores 30-19 with 15 minutes to go.

Kolbe would kick another penalty and despite a Ardie Savea try with four minutes to go, the All Blacks couldn’t get closer than the seven point deficit.

Lood de Jager went to the sin bin for a high tackle in the closing minutes but the game finished 33-26 to the home side.
