Former All Blacks captain Sam Cane has identified Ellis Park as the most hostile venue in World Rugby.
When speaking on the Aftermatch Show podcast with All Blacks cult hero Stephen Donald, the former teammates were looking forward to the Rugby’s Greatest rivalry tour when they identified the venue as a difficult place to travel to.
What did Cane say about Ellis Park?
Cane spoke openly about the experience of heading to Ellis Park and how difficult it can be; “It’s mainly the drive in, I reckon. It feels like a kilometre out there is just people”, he said.
He added, “We’re driving in one day, and there’s a bus of supporters right next to us, and they are giving us the fingers.”
This scene would intimidate many players, but there was one player that didn’t feel the effects, according to Cane.
“Colesy’s (Dane Coles) sitting in front of me and he’s just giving it straight back to them.” Dane Coles will captain the All Blacks squad for the opening part of the tour while Ardie Savea gets rest ahead of the test matches at the end of the month.
Rugby’s Greatest rivalry heads to Ellis Park
The Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour will see the All Blacks travel to South Africa for a full tour, which will see the All Blacks play four tests against the Springboks. The first test will see the All Blacks return to Ellis Park, where they will then play the Lions in the midweek before the second test.
