Connacht’s 2026/27 academy intake has given the province a sharper front-row succession line, with Ireland Under-20 hooker Duinn Maguire among the headline additions.
The province has confirmed an 18-man academy squad for next season, including eight Year 1 players. Maguire is joined in the intake by props Adam Cooper and Luke Murtagh, full-back Cian Brady, back-rower Charlie Keane, loosehead Rory Lyons, lock Liam McNamee and centre Rourke O’Sullivan.
The timing matters. Keane, Maguire and Cooper are currently with Ireland’s Under-20 squad in Georgia and were all named to start up front for the World Rugby Junior World Championship pool match against the USA, giving Connacht a direct read on how quickly that forward group is adjusting to tournament-level pressure.
Academy intake gives Connacht a forward base
For a province that has repeatedly needed to maximise pathway depth, this is more than a routine academy list. Connacht have pushed eight of last season’s nine Year 1 players into Year 2, while Albert Lindner, Daniel Ryan, Sean Walsh and Mikey Yarr have already made senior appearances.
That gives the 2026/27 group a clearer runway. Maguire’s arrival is especially relevant because front-row development often moves slowly; exposure to international age-grade rugby can shorten that curve if the player is physically ready and technically robust.
Connacht’s academy now has a heavy local spine, but the inclusion of Spain Under-20 lock McNamee and South African-born O’Sullivan also widens the profile of the group. The next test is whether this intake can turn representative promise into URC minutes.
