IRFU Payment Crackdown Puts Clubs On 2026/27 Notice

Share

The IRFU has put Irish clubs on formal notice before the 2026/27 season, confirming stronger enforcement of its long-standing rules banning payments, inducements and other material benefits connected to player registration or movement.

In an official update, Irish Rugby confirmed that Regulation 6 will remain in place after a review in which clubs overwhelmingly backed retaining the existing framework. The shift is not the creation of a new payment rule; it is the tightening of how that rule is policed.

Why the enforcement detail matters

The IRFU Club Affairs Committee will now have expanded powers to monitor player movements, review advertisements and social media activity, conduct audits where required and speak directly with players. RugbyConnect will also require players to confirm they have not received a prohibited payment or inducement when registering or transferring.

For clubs operating around the 2026/27 Energia All-Ireland League calendar, that creates a sharper compliance edge. Recruitment conversations, sponsor-linked offers and informal benefits are now far more exposed to scrutiny.

The most significant line is the sanction threat. The IRFU says clubs found in breach may face penalties, and any sanctions imposed will be made public. That turns Regulation 6 from a background governance document into a visible competitive risk before the new campaign starts.
