Fiji have put a new front-row marker down for their Nations Championship opener against Wales, naming Tevita Ikanivere as captain and handing Tim Hoyt a start at tighthead in Cardiff.
The Flying Fijians face Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, 4 July, with the fixture carrying added edge because Fiji are technically the home side. Fiji Rugby has billed the game as a Cardiff takeover, and the selected pack suggests Mick Byrne wants that occasion matched by early set-piece authority.
Hoyt call sharpens Fiji’s Cardiff point
According to the published team list, Hoyt joins Eroni Mawi and Ikanivere in the front row, while Isoa Nasilasila and Temo Mayanavanua form the lock pairing. Behind them, Pita-Gus Sowakula, Kitione Salawa and Elia Canakaivata give Fiji a back row built for collision speed rather than containment.
The selection also keeps heavy strike power in reserve. Peceli Yato is listed on the bench, giving Fiji a late-game carrier if Wales survive the opening pressure. That makes this a different angle from the wider extended squad story: this is now about who carries the first contact.
For Wales, already under pressure after the build-up around the match-fee agreement, the first scrum and first defensive exit now carry disproportionate weight. The selection makes Ikanivere’s leadership and Hoyt’s bind two of the clearest early pressure points in Cardiff.
