Leo Cullen’s confirmed Leinster exit has given the province and the IRFU a 12-month recruitment window for one of the biggest coaching decisions in European rugby.
Leinster have confirmed that Cullen will step away from his head coach role when his current contract ends after the 2026/27 season. The province said he and his coaching staff will remain in charge until June 2027, with planning for next season already advanced.
The timing is significant. Cullen’s final campaign will include Leinster’s return to the redeveloped Laya Arena at the RDS, squad movement across the summer and the immediate start of a formal recruitment process run with the IRFU.

Cullen framed the decision as a natural break point after what will be 12 years in the job by 2027 and 32 years since he first represented Leinster as a schools player. Leinster chief executive Shane Nolan said Cullen’s record includes seven trophies in 11 years, capped by the recent URC final win at Croke Park.
That is the standard the next appointment must inherit. Leinster are not simply replacing a head coach; they are choosing the figure who must preserve domestic dominance while reopening the route to European authority.
