Leicester had been on a great run in the PREM, winning five in a row before they travelled to Saracens in the last round. They had suffered a heavy defeat against Bordeaux in the Champions Cup round of 16, but bounced back with a heavy win over the Newcastle Red Bulls. Against the Saracens, they had been drawing 12-12 at halftime. In the second half, they conceded a try, but were unable to match this, only scoring a penalty.

Northampton have won eight PREM games in a row, only losing in the PREM Cup to Exeter and the narrow defeat to Bath in the Champions Cup quarter-final. In the last round of the PREM, they got revenge for the Champions Cup defeat to Bath, beating them 41-38. The game was level as the clock went into the red. Fin Smith held his nerve to kick the winning penalty and win the match by three.
