The Hurricanes continued their winning run to three in a row with an impressive 50-8 win away to the Highlanders. They conceded early, giving the Highlanders a seven point lead before scoring eight tries and 50 points unanswered to win 50-7. That meant that three of their four wins this year have seen them score 50 or more points in the game. Their loss in this run came against the Fijian Drua, where they lost by five points, having led 20-13 with half an hour to go.

The Reds started the season with a heavy loss to the Waratahs but have won all four of the games that they have played since, including the home game against the Reds. This is their first trip to New Zealnad of the season, winning in Fiji in the last round.
