England fell to a disappointing 24-17 defeat to France in their Six Nations opener on Sunday. Eddie Jones’ side found themselves 17-0 down at the break and despite the best efforts from Jonny May, failed to complete a dramatic comeback. Here’s how we rated the England players from the defeat in Paris.
George Furbank - 6
A difficult Six Nations debut for Furbank with England being on the back foot. Dropped a pass in a good attacking position early on.
Jonny May - 8.5
Stopped playing expecting Nigel Owens to blow his whistle in the build up to France’s second try. Lit up the second half with two exceptional individual scores.
Manu Tuilagi - 6
Subbed off with an injury after 15 minutes. Had made a couple of good carries up to then.
Owen Farrell - 6.5
Took a knock to the arm early on which could have been the cause of some uncharacteristic dropped passes.
Elliot Daly - 6
Had a quiet game in a poor England performance. An early break first half but kicked away possession in the second.
George Ford - 5.5
Good kick early in the second half to create English pressure but looked harried under the first half French onslaught.
Ben Youngs - 6
Another who couldn’t really effect the game as he would have wished.
Tom Curry - 6
Had to step into Billy Vunipola’s shoes and play out of position. Didn’t offer the same carrying threat.
Sam Underhill - 6
Good line out steal and surge forward early on but missed a tackle for the first French try which was unlike him.
Courtney Lawes - 6
Carried manfully when the French had the upper hand. Was unable to take a high ball which led to France’s second score.
Charlie Ewels - 5.5
Stole a French ball at the lineout was a positive moment for him but was subbed off on 56 minutes.
Maro Itoje - 7
Good defensively, disrupting the French ball and a safe pair of hands at the lineout.
Kyle Sinckler - 6
Struggled to impose himself on the game but wasn’t alone in that regard.
Jamie George - 6
The English set piece didn’t function as well as usual and George struggled to get going.
Joe Marler - 5.5
A tough day at the office and was replaced on 51 minutes. Average at best.
Jonathan Joseph - 6
On for Tuilagi. No errors but not a huge amount of attacking threat in a difficult game for England.
Luke Cowan Dickie - 7
On for George. Kick started some English and French pushing and shoving after France’s third try by following through on Ollivon after he had dived over for the score. England’s scrum did improve as the game wore on.
Ellis Genge - 6.5
Nearly got himself carded straight after coming on by tackling Ntmack after the French outside half had cleared. Looked to impose himself on the game early. Was part of an improved English pack.
George Kruis - 7
Nearly scored when England were rallying but was held up by French defenders.
Will Stuart - N/A
On too late for a score.
Ollie Devoto - N/A
On too late for a score.
