Cipriani poised for first England start since 2008

Danny Cipriani is set to make his first start for England since 2008.

The three match series with South Africa already lost after the first two Tests, head coach Eddie Jones has taken the opportunity to shuffle the lineup and assess his options.

Appearing as a substitute in Saturday’s 23-12 defeat in Bloemfontein, Cipriani won his first cap in three years.

Aged 30, the fly-half was integral to Wasps’ playoff runs in the last two seasons, and forced Jones’ hand to once again include him in the national side.

Something of a controversial figure, Jones was adamant that a slip-up in Cipriani’s conduct would result in the London-native being sent home.

However, the coach has spoke glowingly of Cipriani’s attitude, and has rewarded him with a start in the culminating fixture of what has been an otherwise disastrous tour for England.

Cipriani replaces George Ford in the starting XV, who drops out of the 23-man squad entirely.

Brad Shields is dropped due to illness, as Chris Robshaw rejoins the back row.

England team to play South Africa in Cape Town:

Elliot Daly (Wasps); Jonny May (Leicester Tigers), Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs), Owen Farrell (Saracens, capt), Mike Brown (Harlequins); Danny Cipriani (Wasps), Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers); Joe Marler (Harlequins), Jamie George (Saracens), Kyle Sinckler (Harlequins), Joe Launchbury (Wasps), Maro Itoje (Saracens), Chris Robshaw (Harlequins), Tom Curry (Sale Sharks), Nathan Hughes (Wasps).

Luke Cowan-Dickie (Exeter Chiefs), Alec Hepburn (Exeter Chiefs), Harry Williams (Exeter Chiefs), Jonny Hill (Exeter Chiefs), Mark Wilson (Newcastle Falcons), Sam Simmonds (Exeter Chiefs), Ben Spencer (Saracens), Denny Solomona (Sale Sharks)
