Scarlets sign South African international

Scarlets have completed the signing of South African player Uzair Cassiem from the Free State Cheetahs ahead of the 2018-19 season, according to BBC Sport.

He joins the club after Scarlets also signed Blade Thompson and Kieron Fonotia ahead of next season.

Scarlets have had a strong season to date and currently lie in second place in the table, just three points behind the league leaders Leinster.

The club are set to lose Scotland captain John Barclay to Edinburgh next season as well as back-five forward Tadhg Beirne, who will head back to his home-nation of Ireland to play for Munster.

Cassiem brings a wealth of expierence to the stage and is a big signing for the club. Capped eight times for South Africa, he could help them to perform even better next season after having lost just four of their 17 league games to date.

Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac spoke following the arrival of the new signing:

“He’s a dynamic player that likes to carry and has the ability to offload. He is a very physical individual.

“He has the ability to play across the back row but has been signed primarily as an eight.”
