Wasps have had a £7m training ground plan rejected by Coventry City Football Club, with the Coventry city council to discuss further actions next week.
After relocating to Coventry, Wasps have made an effort to improve facilities to aid their fight for the play-offs. One of these being a plan to build a training base at the Alan Higgs Centre.
It is understood that Coventry City objected the proposed build due to the fact that their academy uses the site regularly, although the football club’s contract to use the centre expires in June 2017.
Coventry City made ‘a number’ of objections before June 30th when an initial deadline was set.
A letter was recently published in which chairman Tim Fisher, managing director Chris Anderson and director Mark Venus voiced their reasoning for objecting Wasps’ plan.
Given the obvious potential impact of the proposed facility on a long-standing community institution and sports club, we request that we be included in the deliberations in order to safeguard the public interest and provide representation for young athletes and their families.
Wasps also have plans to extend and improve its current facilities, including an indoor training centre and a kicking barn.
The Higgs Centre is owned by the Coventry Sports Foundation who are believed to be supporting Wasps due to the fact that Coventry City Football Club are looking elsewhere to create a new training and academy facility.
Despite a June 30th deadline, the Coventry City council are expected to take the objections to mind and conjure up a resolution for the ongoing incident.
