Wales’ Dan Lydiate looks likely to miss his country’s tour of New Zealand after picking up an injury during the defeat to England at Twickenham on Sunday.
The flanker was the temporary captain in place of Sam Warburton, but he went off half-way through the first period with hamstring and shoulder injuries respectively.
Welsh head coach Warren Gatland announced that it would take a ‘miracle’ for Lydiate to play in the three-test series in New Zealand.
Lydiate’s loss will be a big blow to Wales who were looking to this set of international fixtures to make up for a disappointing Six Nations campaign.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Warren Gatland discussed Lydiate’s injury and Wales plans without him.
He is struggling, he has got a hamstring and potentially an AC (shoulder) injury as well.
I think Dan has got to process it himself in terms of the tour could already be over for him. It is incredibly disappointing that it is unlikely he is going to be getting on the plane tomorrow.
He will go back to the hotel to have ice and stuff. The assessment from our physios doesn’t look very positive at the moment.
The Welsh Rugby Union confirmed in a press release that Cardiff Blues flanker Ellis Jenkins, uncapped for Wales at senior level but the former Wales U20s captain, has been drafted in to replace Lydiate.
