Pocock issues sincere apology after choking Leitch

Australia and Brumbies flanker David Pocock has issued a strong apology after he was found guilty of choking Chiefs’ number-eight Michael Leitch in a Super Rugby game last weekend.

Late on during Brumbies’ 48-23 loss at Canberra, Pocock appeared to choke Leitch in a maul, with the Japanese international then seeking medical attention after the breakdown.

SANZAAR have since banned Pocock for three weeks, and the Australian forward has now offered a heartfelt apology to Leitch, Brumbies, Chiefs and all rugby fans after his actions. In his blog, the 27-year-old said:

Yesterday I faced the judiciary for the first time in my rugby career. I am incredibly disappointed with my actions. I endeavour to play the game I love in a way that reflects the kind of toughness and decency I think rugby can teach us.

On Saturday night I did not live up to those standards, placing Michael Leitch in danger by binding on his neck in a maul. It was not my intention to hurt Michael, but in these sorts of circumstances it is not intention that matters. I am grateful that World Rugby and SANZAAR are concerned about making the game safer for all of us.

The 55-capped Wallaby added another apology to Leitch specifically, as well as his teammates. He went on to say:

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise again to Michael. And to apologise to the Chiefs, Brumbies and all those who follow rugby. I’d also like to apologise to my team mates who I will let down over the next few weeks while suspended.

Despite his actions being dangerous and rash, Pocock’s apology does seem sincere and truthful. He’ll definitely be a big loss to the Brumbies in the coming weeks, with Stephen Larkham’s side facing some crucial fixtures against Waratahs, Crusaders and Highlanders in the near future.
