Scarlets handed suspended fine for ineligible player

Welsh regional side Scarlets have been fined €10,000 for naming Regan King’s son Jacob Cowley in their matchday squad of 23 for their group match with Racing 92 in January.

Whilst the player did not actually take part in the game, in which the Scarlets were well-beaten 64-14, he was listed amongst the substitutes. And, as reported by Wales Online, Cowley was not registered for the Champions Cup so was not eligible to play.

The disciplinary committee for the European tournament recognised that it was an error and not an act that was trying to deceive the tournaments rules, which is why the fine is a suspended one.

The suspended fine means that should the Scarlets breach and further rules between February 17th, 2016 and May 31st, 2018, the fine then becomes payable.

This issue comes at the end of a very disappointing Champions Cup campaign for the Welsh side, after losing all six group matches against Racing 92, Northampton Saints and Glasgow Warriors.
