Saints announce departure of former Lions and England star

Earlier this season Corbisiero announced that he would be taking a one-year sabbatical from rugby starting at the end of the current season. However, today Northampton Saints announced that the front row forward will be leaving the club with immediate effect, due to being released from his contract early.

The ex-London Irish player has made 24 appearances for his most recent club and has scored two tries; these are pretty good statistics considering that he has only been there since 2013 and has had a career badly disrupted with injuries.

He has also appeared for England at age-group level and 19 times for the senior side. As well as that, he was a member of the winning Lions tour to Australia and score the first try in the final test against the Wallabies.

Corbisiero has always had the reputation as one of the best loosehead props on the planet but has never had a long enough time without injury to nail down his position in the England team and so has never fully able to show off his talents, especially in the scrum. He even missed out on the Rugby World Cup due to not being seen as fully fit by Stuart Lancaster.

Corbisiero said to the Saints that he would always remember his time at Franklin’s Gardens:

I’d like to thank everyone in the Northampton Saints organisation for all of their support on and off the field these last couple of years.

Jim Mallinder, the Saints Director of rugby, added:

We wish him success in whatever he decides to do in the future.
