Leinster’s Ian Madigan set for Top 14

Ireland fly-half Ian Madigan is set for a new challenge in France in the Top 14 after agreeing to a two-year deal to join Bordeaux-Begles.

The Irish playmaker, who impressed for his nation during this year’s Rugby World Cup despite Ireland’s eventual elimination at the hands of Argentina, has admitted that it was the right time for a new career path.

As reported by Fox Sports, Madigan stated:

This was a very difficult decision for me to make, leaving the club that I have represented my whole professional life.

I look forward to experiencing a new life and style of rugby in France.

Since making his debut for Leinster in 2009, the 26-year-old was eventually provided with a first team opportunity in 2013 when Johnny Sexton moved to France with Racing Metro and managed to amass 765 points in 135 matches, including 24 tries.Ian Walton/Getty Images Sport

Last season the Dublin-born playmaker was one of Leinster’s standout performers as he won the PRO 12 Golden Boot Award for his 87.04 per cent goal-kicking success rate (47 kicks out of 54), as well as finishing at the European Champions Cup’s leading point-scorer (113).

However, this season he has once again been forced to make way for the returning Sexton after his Ireland teammate struggled to make an impact in France.

Madigan will, however, remain with Leinster until the end of the season and is hoping that he can conclude his current chapter with his side on a positive note:

It is a challenge I’m looking forward to. Bordeaux are a team that is making strides in the Top 14 and in Europe and I look forward to being part of that journey.

There is a huge few weeks and months ahead with Leinster, and I look forward to playing my part and trying to finish the season out as strongly as possible for them.
