According to Wales Online, the hopeful possibility that Leigh Halfpenny could join Premiership side Wasps has faded, the Wales international is supposedly mindful of the international release rules in English rugby.
It’s believed that the Coventry based team made an offer to the Welsh full-back which would see him join them from Toulon at the beginning of next season.
Halfpenny was apparently intrigued by Wasps’ progression after transferring to the Ricoh Arena, but he wants to be available for every Welsh test match, along with training commitments.
The organisation that represents the top flight of premier English rugby, Premier Rugby Limited, doesn’t grant test releases for non-English players.
It’s suspected that Wasps are now monitoring other options due to Halfpenny’s decision to not join them.
This incident also rules out a move for Halfpenny to join any other English club, as the same problem will pop-up.
Warren Gatland will feel under less pressure as an important player in his squad is attached to a contract.
Scarlets and Cardiff Blues are reportedly interested in Halfpenny, they may feel boosted due to the fact he seems certain not to join an English club.
Wasps have also been denied the signing of Scarlets player Scott Williams, but Ospreys are also interested in the centre.
