Preview: London Irish vs Wasps

London Irish face Coventry based side Wasps at Twickenham this weekend, in a highly anticipated Aviva Premiership clash in this year’s London Double Header.

Irish haven’t won a competitive match in all competitions since April, courtesy of a victory at home to Agen in the first round of the European Challenge Cup.

Twickenham hasn’t hosted much happiness for the Exiles in recent visits, they have failed to win at England’s home of rugby since 2010. Their last victory there was against reigning Premiership champions Saracens, since then Irish have lost their last six visits.

Fortunately for London Irish, Wasps haven’t been so successful at Twickenham in recent visits, winning just one of their four previous trips to the national stadium, that win being a 38-30 victory over Gloucester.

Unfortunately for London Irish, Wasps have lost just one of their last five fixtures, Leicester Tigers taking a 16-24 victory from the Ricoh Arena in the third round of this season’s Premiership.

The Exiles are still yet to win this season.

Wasps, formerly London Wasps, have only lost once in their past four fixtures with London Irish, losing 20-23 to them at Adams Park back in February. The Exiles have the advantage of beating Wasps in the team’s only clash at Twickenham – the 2008 London Double Header.

The Boys in Black and Gold are currently eighth in the league, compared to Irish being eleventh.

The match will kick-off at 5:30pm this Saturday.

Wayne Barnes will referee his 157th Premiership match, Paul Burton and Andrew Pearce will assist him. Sean Davey will be the TMO for the fixture.

My Prediction: London Irish 9-33 Wasps
