Cockerill delighted with Tigers start

Leicester Tigers boss Richard Cockerill has spoken about how pleased he is with the Tigers start to the Champions Cup.

Their 3-36 victory over PRO12 side Treviso puts them top of Pool 4, with two bonus point wins in their first two matches.

Talking after the game, Cockerill spoke of his happiness in the team going forward, but also their defending.

You’ve got to be satisfied with maximum points from two games and also with not conceding a try. The attitude in defence not to let them in even when we were well ahead said a lot for the team. The boys responded well after conceding three times against Stade Francais last weekend.

Cockerill also praised full-back Telusa Veainu, after his brace of tries was a defining factor in Leicester’s victory. His second try, and Leicester’s fourth, is what Cockerill focused his attention on, especially the impressive technique of Veainu to score.

It was great footwork – a bit of individual brilliance – from Telusa Veainu for the fourth try. His individual skills got us that try – that was one of the reasons we included him in the team. And it was good for us that we added another try right at the end.

The Englishman took time to praise the opposition, Treviso, but has lauded his team for being able to break them down.

Treviso made it hard for us, they were tackling themselves to a standstill. We had some good set-piece early in the second half and probably should have made more from that. But we kept going and we got the rewards in the end.

When Tigers return to domestic action next week, they will face Bath, who currently lie one place below them in the table. Tigers currently sit fourth in the Aviva Premiership, with 12 points from their first four matches.
