Premiership up Salary Cap

The Aviva Premiership salary cap is set to rise by £1m next season, according to reports from ESPN.

For the 2016-17 season, the cap will rise from £5.5m to £6.5m, and is then set to rise to £7m the following season.

Clubs who breached salary cap regulations in previous season have reached ‘agreements’ with Premiership Rugby, the organisation say.

The change in the ruling is expected to help the calibre of players in the Premiership, attracting players from the likes of the French leagues with the incentive of higher wages.

It is also hoped that better players in the league can lead to more lucrative commercial deals, the revenue from which can be injected in to development for young English talent.

Premiership chief Mark McCafferty believes that the better playing quality in the Premiership due to the salary cap increase can help English clubs to achieve success on a European scale
