Wood escapes citing for Williams incident

England flanker Tom Wood will not be punished for his incident involving Liam Williams during the England v Wales match.

Wood will be allowed to play against Australia in their next group stage match. The England international made shin contact with Williams’ head as he tried to keep possession for Wales as they beat England 28-25.

Wood did apologise to the Welshman on social media, saying that he was “Really relieved to hear you’re back on your feet OK mate. Horrible to see you stretchered off because of me. Hope you have a speedy recovery.”

Williams, the twenty-four-year-old full back, will have a gradual return to rugby due to head injury protocols.

The Welshman will miss his country’s remaining pool matches against Fiji and Australia.

The absence of Williams adds to Wales’ injury list – Scott Williams and Hallam Amos will miss the rest of the tournament with leg and shoulder injuries respectively.

Wales will be playing Fiji in Cardiff next before pool rivals England play the Wallabies at Twickenham later this Saturday.
