When will Beauden Barrett break the All Blacks test cap record?

Beauden Barrett made his 147th test match appearance for the All Blacks as he helped his side to a Bledisloe Cup win in Sydney. This puts him within touching distance of several massive milestones and records in international rugby.

150 caps

Barrett could reach the incredible feat of 150 caps this November in the Rugby Nations Championship.

The All Blacks will play against Scotland, Wales and England before they play in a final game to decide their final place. With injuries to Ruben Love and Richie Mo’unga, it is likely that he will be involved in these four games if he is fit. This could bring him to 151 caps by the end of 2026.

All Blacks record- 153 caps

The All Blacks record will most likely be matched and bettered in 2027. This will, of course, be a World Cup year, and while there is no announcement of fixtures so far, based on previous years, we can make some good predictions. In each of the last four World Cup years, there have been 12 scheduled fixtures.

If he plays in all of these games, which, based on his current standing within the squad, is unlikely, he would finish 2027 on 163 caps.

Test match record: 170 caps

For Beauden Barrett to break the all-time test record currently held by Alun Wyn Jones at 170 caps, he would need to be playing Test rugby at least into 2028 or potentially into 2029, when the Lions will tour New Zealand for a three-Test match series.

Rumours have been circulating that Barrett will move to Europe following the 2027 World Cup and therefore, dur to the All Blacks selection policy, we are unlikely to see him break this record.
