Ryan Elias hits 200 Scarlets appearances against Cardiff
Ryan Elias will make his 200th appearance for Scarlets when he leads the team out against Cardiff in their United Rugby Championship opener on Saturday. The Ryan Elias 200 Scarlets games milestone falls on the biggest fixture in the calendar, with the Welsh derby kicking off the region’s new URC season.
Elias made his Scarlets debut back in 2014 and is now 31. Two hundred appearances places him in rare company at the region, a landmark few players reach in a modern career shaped by injuries and squad rotation.
Elias reflects on journey from Owens apprentice to club milestone
Elias called the milestone a source of real pride. “I’m unbelievably proud,” he told BBC Sport. “I would have dreamed of having one game, let alone 200, so to sustain performances in the jersey for so long is special.”
He pointed to former teammates who reached the same landmark before him. “I remember being a young boy and seeing some of my older mates reach the milestone like Aaron Shingler, Gareth Davies, Ken Owens and Jonathan Davies,” he said.
Owens shaped much of his early career. Elias spent his first seasons understudying the Wales hooker before establishing himself as first choice. “I remember when I was young I would be frustrated because I was the young boy sat behind Ken. I was getting 10 or 15 minutes off the bench and I’d be frustrated because I wanted to kick on,” he said. Competition for the Test hooker jersey across the home nations remains fierce, as our earlier report explored.
That patience has paid off at international level too. Elias won his 50th cap for Wales against Argentina in San Juan in July. At 31, he believes his best form is still to come. “I feel maybe I’m only now coming into my peak,” he said.
Vice-captain role and tactical context following 14th-place finish
Elias has been named Scarlets vice-captain for the 2026 season, supporting captain Josh Macleod. “It’s cool for me to be doing it behind Josh, someone I respect and I’ve come through the academy with,” he said.
Head coach Dwayne Peel now works alongside Nigel Davies, permanently appointed as director of rugby. The pair take charge after Scarlets finished 14th in the URC last season, a result that leaves plenty to put right.
Facing Cardiff adds extra edge to Elias’s 200th game. “We feel we owe them one from last year,” he said, with the west Wales derby carrying its usual needle regardless of league position.
Upcoming timeline: Cardiff derby opens new URC campaign
Saturday’s derby opens Scarlets’ United Rugby Championship campaign and gives Peel and Davies an immediate test as they begin life together at the top of the coaching structure. The Ryan Elias 200 Scarlets games milestone will be marked before kickoff, adding weight to a fixture that already means plenty to both sets of supporters.
A strong start would settle nerves after last season’s 14th-place finish and build early momentum before the URC schedule intensifies. Supporters can catch up on the wider build-up in our earlier report on the season ahead.
