The Cheetahs started the Currie Cup with a close-fought win over the Lions, having lost out to the Pumas in the semi-finals of the SA Cup. The victory came from three penalties from Jaco van der Walt, one of which came in the final five minutes to put them in the lead. The Cheetahs scored four tries, but failed to kick any conversions.
