The All Blacks started their Rugby Nations Championship campaign with a win over France. The two-point win came as the first All Blacks game at the One NZ Stadium in Christchurch since its redevelopment and was Rennie’s first in charge of the All Blacks.

The All Blacks suffered an early setback when they conceded on 90 seconds, and Ruben Love ended up in the sin bin for a high tackle. They scored a total of five tries to win the game. Cam Roigard had a man-of-the-match performance with two tries and controlled the game against Maxime Lucu in the French side.

The Italians suffered a shock defeat to Japan in the opener of the tournament. This has revealed an issue for Italy who have lost eight away matches in a row. Ignacio Brex scored on five minutes to give Italy a lead but 17 unanswered points gave Japan a lead into halftime. A penalty for Italy just before the break would be their final score of the game and they would concede 10 more points in the second half.

The All Blacks and Italy have met 17 times in their history, and the All Blacks have won all 17 games. The teams have met regularly at the World Cup meeting in 2023, 2007, 2003 and 1999 versions of the competition. They were meant to play each other in 2019, but the match was abandoned due to poor weather.
