Erasmus rotation gives Springboks a Scotland Pretoria Test fresh edge

Rassie Erasmus has turned South Africa’s Nations Championship meeting with Scotland into an immediate test of Springboks depth after making 10 changes for Saturday’s match in Pretoria.

The Springboks confirmed the reshuffle on Monday, with Erasmus keeping only five starters from the side that beat England 45-21 in Johannesburg. Pieter-Steph du Toit continues as captain while Siya Kolisi remains unavailable, and Handre Pollard returns at fly-half alongside Embrose Papier.

Papier’s selection is the sharpest personnel line. The scrum-half is back in the Test picture for the first time since 2018, giving South Africa a Bulls-influenced spine at Loftus Versfeld. Aphelele Fassi, Edwill van der Merwe and Canan Moodie form a refreshed back three, while Boan Venter, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw make up a new front row.

Scotland face a different South Africa problem

For Gregor Townsend, this is not simply a weakened Springboks side. It is a different tactical exam: Pollard’s control, Papier’s tempo and a six-two bench split built to keep South Africa’s forward pressure rolling deep into the second half.

Scottish Rugby’s own preview notes that Scotland arrive after their opening-round win over Argentina, with the second-round fixture set for Saturday 11 July at Loftus Versfeld. The match is scheduled for 4.40pm UK time and will be shown on ITV and STV.

The wider point is clear: Erasmus is using the Nations Championship to harden his squad before selection pressure tightens. Scotland now have to prove that their Cordoba momentum travels against the world champions’ second wave.
