Aragon Ban Gives JWC Discipline Test Sharp Edge

World Rugby has upheld the citing against Spain U20 player Mateo Aragón and imposed a seven-match ban after the Junior World Championship flashpoint against France in Kutaisi.

The decision followed a referral by France U20 team management over alleged racist verbal abuse directed at one of their players during the Pool D match on 2 July. World Rugby confirmed that an independent disciplinary committee reviewed match footage, audio and witness statements from both squads before ruling that Aragón had not proven, on the balance of probabilities, that the citing should be overturned.

Seven matches after 12-match entry point

The panel was chaired by Ireland’s Jenifer Donovan, with former England player Victoria Irwin and former Argentina referee Juan Pablo Spirandelli also sitting on the committee. World Rugby said the sanction began from a mid-range entry point of 12 matches, but finished at seven after mitigation was considered.

The case now becomes a sharp early test of the tournament’s disciplinary framework. Read Rugby Union had already covered the initial Aragón and Levani Ezieshvili hearing referrals, but this decision gives the Spain case its competitive consequence.

World Rugby added that Aragón has 48 hours from receiving the written decision to appeal under Regulation 17. His fixture list is still to be confirmed, meaning the exact playing impact for Spain U20 will depend on their remaining Junior World Championship schedule and any subsequent appeal process.

The governing body also urged restraint around the case on social media, stressing that complaints of discrimination are treated seriously by its disciplinary personnel.
