Aragon And Ezieshvili Hearings Put JWC Discipline Trial Under Spotlight

World Rugby’s expedited disciplinary process has moved straight back into focus at the Junior World Championship in Georgia.

Spain replacement Mateo Aragon and Georgia prop Levani Ezieshvili will both have cases heard by a Foul Play Review Committee on Friday, 3 July, after separate incidents in the second round of pool matches.

Two cases, two different laws

World Rugby confirmed Aragon, Spain’s number 23, has been cited from France v Spain for an alleged offence under Law 9.12, covering verbal abuse. Ezieshvili, Georgia’s number three, was shown a red card in South Africa v Georgia for an alleged dangerous tackle under Law 9.13.

The timing matters. The 2026 tournament is operating under an expedited off-field sanction trial, with a 12-hour citing window after the final whistle and FPRC reviews ordinarily convened after each matchday. Where a full disciplinary hearing is needed, World Rugby says it should normally be held within 48 hours of the match.

For Georgia, Ezieshvili’s case lands during a brutal Pool A stretch after their narrow opener against Wales, covered by Read Rugby Union here. Spain, meanwhile, were already facing a demanding Pool D assignment after their France U20 preview.

The rulings will also test how consistently the new review model is applied across citings and on-field red cards in a condensed tournament window.
