Hong Kong China’s first World Rugby Nations Cup test has become a leadership examination as much as a rankings opportunity.
HKCR have confirmed that Pierce Mackinlay-West will captain the side against Samoa at Estadio Nacional in Santiago, with the fixture kicking off at 15:00 local time on 4 July.
The call gives the former sevens representative a second straight outing as captain after he led Hong Kong China in last week’s 24-22 warm-up win over a Waikato NPC squad in New Zealand.
Mackinlay-West steps into a brutal Samoa test
World Rugby’s own round-one preview underlined the scale of the assignment, noting that this will be the first-ever meeting between Hong Kong China and Samoa. ReadRugbyUnion has also covered the Samoa-side captaincy angle around Miracle Faiilagi.
It also pointed to Joshua Hrstich’s absence, leaving Mackinlay-West to lead an abrasive back-row unit built around Tyler McNutt and James Sawyer.
HKCR head coach Logan Asplin has framed the selection around form, preparation and the need to handle Samoa’s direct carrying game. That makes the captaincy call more than symbolic.
- Fixture: Samoa v Hong Kong China
- Venue: Estadio Nacional, Santiago
- Referee: Angus Mabey
- Context: Hong Kong China’s first Rugby World Cup build-up at this level
Mackinlay-West said the Waikato game gave him valuable experience leading the group, but insisted Hong Kong China’s leadership must be collective. Against a Samoa side trying to reset after a winless 2025, that shared authority may matter as much as any tactical wrinkle.
