Dan Sheehan will captain Ireland in Sydney after Andy Farrell named his match-day 23 for Saturday’s Nations Championship opener against Australia.

The official Ireland selection confirms Sheehan at hooker and captain for the sold-out Allianz Stadium Test, with kick-off listed for 8.10pm local time and 11.10am Irish time.

Farrell backs Prendergast in a loaded spine

Hugo Keenan starts at full-back, with Rob Baloucoune and Jamie Osborne on the wings. Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form the midfield, while Sam Prendergast partners Jamison Gibson-Park in a half-back pairing that gives Ireland control as well as tempo.

Farrell’s pack has a hard Test edge. Tom O’Toole, Sheehan and Tadhg Furlong make up the front row, Joe McCarthy and James Ryan start at lock, and Cian Prendergast, Josh van der Flier and Jack Conan complete the back row.

The bench is just as revealing: Ronan Kelleher, Jeremy Loughman, Thomas Clarkson, Tadhg Beirne and Nick Timoney cover the forwards, with Craig Casey, Ciaran Frawley and Bundee Aki held back as Ireland’s late-game levers. That gives Farrell a five-three split built for control, not chaos.

The decision ties directly into the pressure points already building around the opener. Ireland must protect the Lansdowne Cup stakes, while Beirne’s bench role adds another layer to the breakdown contest with Australia.
