Ireland’s Nations Championship opener against Australia now carries an extra prize after the IRFU underlined that the Lansdowne Cup will also be on the line in Sydney.
The official Irish Rugby update confirmed that Saturday’s Allianz Stadium meeting will decide both early tournament points and possession of the trophy first introduced in 1999.
It gives Andy Farrell’s squad a sharper emotional hook before a fixture already carrying heavy weight. Ireland have held the cup since their 26-23 win at Aviva Stadium in 2014, then retained it through further victories in 2016, the 2018 Australian series, 2022, the 150 Celebration match in 2024 and again in November 2025.
Why the trophy changes the tone
The Lansdowne Cup angle matters because this is not just another tour opener. Australia have not hosted Ireland since 2018, while Allianz Stadium bills the match as the first home Wallabies clash with Ireland in eight years.
James Ryan has already framed the contest as a physical first examination for Ireland’s pack, and ReadRugbyUnion recently covered how Ryan’s breakdown warning shapes the Wallabies build-up. The cup now adds a second layer: Australia can strike first in the new competition and break Ireland’s long hold on the rivalry trophy.
Irish Rugby’s latest camp footage also shows the squad settling into Sydney, with Farrell reminding players what the match represents.
For Ireland, the cleanest statement would be simple: take the points, keep the cup, and make the first weekend of the Nations Championship feel like an extension of their recent control over Australia.
