Elrigh Louw has been called back into the Springboks squad at the precise point South Africa’s forward depth is being stress-tested before England arrive at Ellis Park.
SA Rugby confirmed on Tuesday that the Vodacom Bulls loose forward will join the national squad in Johannesburg as additional cover for the Nations Championship opener.
The call-up follows the latest blow around Riley Norton, whose anticipated Test breakthrough has been halted by a hamstring injury. SuperSport reported that Norton had been in line for a Springbok debut before the setback.
Why Louw matters now
Louw last played for South Africa against Wales in November 2024, then lost much of 2025 to a serious knee injury. His return through the Bulls pack has now carried him back into Rassie Erasmus’ wider group.
It is a pragmatic selection. South Africa already had selection pressure in the tight five, while Erasmus’ England team announcement showed how aggressively the Springboks intend to start the new competition. Louw gives them a heavier loose-forward option if the bench balance needs reshaping.
That matters because the opener is not a soft launch. The 2023 World Cup winners face England on Saturday, before Scotland at Loftus Versfeld and Wales in Durban. After the Manie Libbok selection call, Louw’s arrival adds another marker: Erasmus is protecting the squad’s collision power before the campaign has properly begun.
