Dupont Withdrawal Gives France Sudden Nations Championship Problem

Antoine Dupont has been forced out of France’s Nations Championship trip, turning what looked like a marquee southern-hemisphere return into an immediate selection headache for Fabien Galthie.

Rugbyrama reports that Dupont will not travel to Australia after suffering calf discomfort following Toulouse’s Top 14 final win over Montpellier. The France captain had been due to fly to Brisbane with the other domestic finalists on Monday, but Paul Graou has now been called into the squad instead.

France lose their late-game control point

The timing matters. France already had their main touring group in Australia, with the finalists expected to strengthen the squad for the matches after this weekend’s opener against New Zealand.

Dupont’s withdrawal removes the cleanest control option around the ruck and shifts more responsibility onto Maxime Lucu, Nolann Le Garrec and now Graou. It also denies France a rare summer look at Dupont outside Europe, with Rugbyrama noting he has not played for Les Bleus in the summer window since the 2017 tour of South Africa.

For Graou, this is a sharp reward for his Toulouse season. He knows the club rhythm around Dupont and Romain Ntamack, but the international question is different: whether he can offer France emergency tempo without disrupting a group already adapting in Brisbane.

The wider blow is strategic. France wanted this Nations Championship block to harden combinations before the next World Cup cycle accelerates. Instead, their first major adjustment has come before Dupont even boarded the plane.
